Today, I am just going to talk about one of my students I take on home tutoring.

He is 7 years and I have taught him for 2 months month now. He is on the Scratch Programming and English Language courses. Every day after our classes, I would dictate some words for him to spell. most times when the words are too difficult for him, he would drop his pen and burst into tears. Some days, he will outrightly tell me it is too hard, and as such he won't spell it.

other days, He would suggest words he should spell. and I will be wondering what gave him such an idea. Hahah.

The essence of the spellings at the end of the class was to help improve his vocabulary and diction. But recently, we had to pause our spelling class and go back to learning how to spell words correctly from their pronunciations.

what I did was take him through understanding syllables.

Why I decided to go through that was because I needed him to understand how each word is obtained. While treating syllables, we learned about the combination of vowels and consonants to form words.

Also, I noticed he usually leaves some letters out while spelling a word. For instance, He will spell “Elevator” as “Eletor” and “Segment” as “Sement” and so on. I had to take the time to teach him how to spot out the syllabic element of words which ultimately helps him spell as he sees them.

Today we decided to go back to our spellings after 3 weeks and guess what, His highest was 7 over 10. Before now, He used to fall at 3 even with words as easy as 5 letter words. But now, we upgraded to 10 letter words and still did great. I am so proud of him.

it’s the weekend already and I cannot wait to begin school on Monday. if you ask me about the lesson from this week, I would tell you the rest when you need to.

see you on Monday
